Used regularly, this will gradually and subtly add pretty red tones to your hair. Beware if you bleach your hair, though, as this can make it go carrot-y).

INGREDIENTS

  • 25g dried sage leaves
  • 20g dried marigold leaves
  • 225ml red wine
  • kaolin powder to mix
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 egg yolk

Put the sage and marigold leaves in a heatproof bowl and heat the wine in a small pan until just boiling. Pour it over the herbs than leave to cool thoroughly. Strain the herb-infused wine and then re-heat in a clean pan. Using a tea strainer or a small sieve, slowly sift the kaolin powder into the wine, stirring constantly, until it has a mask-like consistency. Add the olive oil, which acts as a conditioner, and the egg. Be sure he mixture is cooled before you do this, or it can scramble!

Using clips or grips, section off your fry hair and smooth the paste from roots to tip of each section. Then wrap your hair in clingfilm and leave on for at least 45 minutes. You can put a warm towel over the clingfilm, if you like. Rinse out with plenty of warm water, then shampoo and condition.

RED HAIR ALSO LOVES…

hibiscusGinger powder and juniper berries; you can also make a decoction from nasturtiums, and use this as a final rinse.

Hibiscus flowers also give red highlights to light or dark hair, and will enrich natural red. Make a tisane from the flowers (or you can buy hibiscus teabags); allow to cool and strain before using as a final rinse.

Cranberry juice also works as a natural brightener for red hair, enhancing its brightness and smoothing the cuticles, so it looks shinier. Be sure to use unsweetened cranberry juice, though, or it will leave your hair sticky.
