Liquorice has a wealth of healing properties, ancd the Chinese have been using this herb in traditional medicine for thousand of years.

LIQUORICE PROPERTIES

Liquorice is a good remedy for lowering stomach-acid levels, so it may help to relieve over-acidity in the digestive tract and stomach ulcers. With its expectorant properties, it is useful for coughs, asthma and chest infections. The root contains glycyrrhizic acid, which gives the herb its anti-inflammatory, anti-allergenic and anti-arthritic actions. With an aspirin-like effect, it is helpful in relieving fevers and headaches. It also acts on the liver, increasing bile flow and lowering cholesterol.

LIQUORICE INFUSION

Liquorice infusion is useful for coughs and chest complaints.Alexander the Great, Caesar and Brhama endorsed the properties of liquorice.

Ingredients:

  • 25g liquorice root
  • 1 heaped tablespoon flaxseeds
  • 110g raisins
  • 2 litres water
  • 110g brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar

Place the liquorice, flaxseed, raisins and water in a saucepan, and bring to the boil. Leave to simmer  until the water has reduced by about half. Add the sugar and white wine vinegar, then stir well. Drink 240ml before going to bed.
