The cooling effect of cucumber with aloe vera is utterly soothing and restorative.

Ingredients:

  • 2.5 cm slice aloe vera leaf or 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel, available from a natural foodstore
  • 2.5 cm chunk cucumber
  • 1/4 tablespoon cornflour
  • 1 tablespoon witch hazel
  • 1 drop grapefruit seed extract

Pound the peeled aloe vera leaf or the aloe gel with the cucumber in a pestle and mortar (or whizz in a herb grinder) until they are smoothly blended. Then put in a double-boiler with the cornflour and heat until almost boiling. Allow to cool slightly then add the witch hazel and the grapefruit seed extract. Pour into a small, sterile glass jar and put in the fridge to cool completely. Lightly dab the gel onto the “orbital bone” around the eye (essentially, the eye socket area).

WARNING

Be super-aware that natural cosmetics – made without synthetic preservatives – can become cintaminated: immediately ditch any eye preparation if it starts to smell different or if you get any kind of eye infection. Always ensure your hands are clean when you use any home-made eye treat. Never put a home-made infusion directly into your eyes; it may not be sufficiently sterile.
